El Día del Niño in Cancun

El Día del Niño is a Mexican national holiday that is dedicated to celebrating all children. While in practice the holiday in Mexico is a wonderful excuse to spoil your children and have a fun day, the true meaning of El Día del Niño is more serious as it is a day to remember the rights of all children, remembering the less fortunate children who are suffering from poverty, war, abuse and neglect. El Día del Niño is a time to remember to donate to our children’s charities  whether monetary gifts, old toys, school supplies and more.

In Mexico, El Día del Niño was first celebrated as far back as 1925, which was way before the United Nations proposed that each country introduce a day in its calendar to commemorate the 1959 Children’s Rights Declaration. In Mexico, the day chosen to celebrate El Día del Niño was on April 30th to mark the official signing of the first Children’s Rights Declaration set out by the precursor to the United Nations – the League of Nations – in 1924. On this date in 1924, President Álvaro Obregón and Public Education Minister José Vasconcelos signed the first Mexican Children’s Rights Declaration. Since then El Día del Niño in Mexico has been celebrated on the last day of April.
